Americans have been trained to seek out the lowest cost...

...all else equal, regardless of "true" costs. People constantly brag about the great deal they got. Never hear someone brag about how much they paid. Some describe this as "free market capitalism". Others refer to it as "savage (American?) capitalism". Regardless of description , seems unsustainable in the long run even as current culture is oblivious.
