The reviewer is always faced with the conflict between system "churn" and
changing just one component - the one currently being reviewed. But for
Stereophile's reviews, the latter is our policy.

I agree. But there are always exceptions, such as when I used the Ayre QX5
Twenty in my review of the Rockport Avior II speaker. Though my review of
the QX-5 Twenty was published after that of the Rockport, I had already
formed an opinion of the QX5's intrinsic character using speakers that had
been reviewed. And the QX5 was one of 3 DACs used in preparing the Rockport
report, both of the others having been reviewed.
