You just cannot grasp that...

to most folk, Ethann's ad (if as presented here) was all the disclosure that normal people need. Any more was redundant and unnecessary. He made the assumption that the buyer can clearly understand English.

As you said, you understood it perfectly; why not give other buyers the respect of thinking that they are also competent adults?

You show an incredible ability to stubbornly refuse to acknowledge what everybody else understands clearly. (Actually I like that in an Inmate!) Now one more time..."like new" to 99.9% of English-capable Americans does not mean, or imply, that 1) the item is new or 2) that there is any implied warranty. Once you get that it all drops into place nicely.

As far as earned trust goes, if I think that there is ANYTHING wrong with the item I am selling I say so. But I do not study my ads to see if there is any way an idiot could mis-interpret what I have said; there is no end to that and an idiot will always find a way to misunderstand (or willingly and maliciously do so). Still, I suppose I could put a disclaimer in saying "Hey dummy! In case you were sleeping the last 100 years, Used means no warranty unless the product is built by a great company like Bryston (Like in this case does not mean a company has to BE Bryston but merely act in a manner close to Bryston's in the matter of warranties)"

As far as Ethann not just adding a few words to his ad and thereby avoiding all the problems...well that is another problem entirely. As an American, I agree with Dr Draz and have been known to go to great lengths to stop a coporate or Govt bully if I thought I was in the right. It is what Americans do; when I was single, that is. Once you are resposible for others you have to pick your fights carefully.
