This is for Don T.....

Since the original thread started I have been doing a (highly informal) poll of all the folks I know; no one, I mean no one, including immigrants (if they speak English at all), takes the phrase "like new" to mean "new with warranties". At the age of 8 I knew that "like new" means anything from "nearly new in condition" to "aged beyond belief". Then again, it is possible that I hang out with the more intelligent people.....(Don't all audiophiles like to feel that way?)

Perhaps (only a hypothesis, so don't get upset) you are not familiar with American idiom?
