RE: "We tend to deal with the squeaky wheels based on Alerts"...

Generally, we don't get that many alerts and get blamed for not doing something when we're not even aware of the problem, so one alert works. We do have some users that use the alert function more often that most which never use it. Each mod might weigh those comments differently. Personally, I don't have any bias for or against people and look at the post in question and the responses and previous posts in the thread for context. Bad is bad. OTOH, some alerters may be overly sensitive at times and I might choose to do nothing.

Then, we have a few folks that most often complain about the same person. We try to get those folks to agree to disagree and not engage each other.

I can't recall a time where any gang mentality swayed our decision process. The only time we get multiple alerts from more than a couple people is when some obvious spammer hits a few forums and the decision to ban them permanently is obvious. Usually, those people are pitching cheap cell phones or Viagra or something of that sort.

The current situation is one of the more difficult ones as it's not a black and white issue and we have Inmates on both sides of the controversy. While it takes two to tango, my thought process is to evaluate the posting history and gauge who is the central person in these controversies over time.
