As I recall

The audio press, generally speaking, was more independent and critical in the 80s. A fair number of writers didn't like the sound of the early CD players, and said so.

Which is also somewhat besides the point. Based on the evidence, I don't think anyone can refute the point that Issak is making: that Stereophile is not merely reporting on MQA, but is becoming an extension of MQA marketing in participating in its press events and evangelizing its sound. Of course, whether one thinks that is proper or not is another matter. Personally, I don't.
