There is a fair amount of circumstantial evidence that this is EXACTLY the end game plan of the record labels - stop selling high quality music in a form that can be copied.

Streaming is perfect, as once you are used to renting there is nothing keep the monopolies from raising the rent. Remember when HBO and Showtime were $30 per month? What is the average cable bill today?

Sony is spending millions to build new vinyl pressing plants in Japan. This is one format that cannot be copied - and it sells for $30 pop.

If they cripple the CD by making it into a 13-bit piece of junk, who would want to buy that? - especially if it required new hardware to achieve the best sound?
