It matters because...

...it might provide some clue as to why McIntosh was picking on this guy. If he got a special price break (like industry "insiders" sometimes get), then turned around and sold it at a profit, then McIntosh might be pissed at him and trying to extract revenge. Furthermore--though I doubt it--if he got a special price he might actually be violating--ethically if not legally--some explicit or implicit agreement.

If it were me I'd need to have a really good reason to lose $3K on a Hi Fi deal in just two weeks. I'm not asking him to reveal his motives, just to assure us that he wasn't doing anything wrong. If he bought at retail like any other customer, hoping to enjoy his new amplifiers, and now, two weeks later, before they're even broken in, he is forced to sell for $3K less than he paid, then I feel very sorry for him, and I think McIntosh is acting VERY badly, and will come to regret these lousy business practices.

This isn't an accusation--just an honest query. I'm interested to know the answer.
