Like a number of other highly regarded (on Hi-Rez Hwy postings) SACDs, the Weather Report stereo and surround source master is pcm. The SACD release does not claim "Pure DSD" on the cover. The source was recorded long before the release medium was contemplated. This means that the DVD-A is actually generationally closer to the source. The SACD is made from an up-conversion to DSD from the pcm mix source. The fact that most like the SACD better says more about the respective players' quality than anything else, IMO.This particular release is unusual since we normally stick to "Pure DSD" for SACD releases. We decided to release the WR disc on SACD long after we mastered for DVD-A because we were getting a lot of requests for it on SACD - and we wanted to have a good comparison of release formats with pcm-to-DSD conversions instead of the other way around. After hearing both end products, I think we did the right thing. It certainly comes across better on every price level of SACD player I've heard as compared to any DVD-A player yet.
As the positive reaction on this list to SACDs from pcm sources on other labels attests, the source medium has little to do with how the release is received. The music, performance, recording quality, and mix presentation (in that order) have the most to do with it's overall success.
