Come-on DSD -- why still no technical rebuff for Lipshitz/Vanderkooi? . . .

While there may have been numerous valid arguments buried in the IAR article, the author of this diatribe has shot himself in the foot. If nothing else, the sheer length is enough to put off many people. As a journalist myself, I could probably have written what he said in less than one tenth of the wordcount. Moreover, the wording is so opinionated and much of the information portrayed is so second-hand. He really should have left the science of PCM and DSD to those qualified to explain it properly.

Having said that, I cannot say that Sony and its marketing acolytes have been behaving impeccably – as they routinely use terminology specifically designed to confuse and obfuscate the unsuspecting public regarding the alleged merits of DSD versus PCM. But this is no excuse for people on the other side of the fence to lower the debate by overreacting to Sony’s dubious tactics.

So why are there still no objective technical papers (fully sourced and referenced) to rebuff the revealing one produced some time ago by Lipshitz/Vanderkooi? In particular, why has Sony still not successfully countered the arguments therein? How come no malicious defamation lawsuit from Sony?

While pro-DSD’ers are understandably jumping on the IAR article as an example of bullshit from the other side, I nevertheless believe that the merging of all audio (and video) formats as DVD-A/-V, is the logical, flexible, and most technically sound way to go. And as an engineering graduate myself, I am confident that the numbers for PCM do add-up. I cannot say the same for DSD. And after all, the math doesn't lie. Neither do my ears.

Best regards,
