RE: Heard a reference level planar speaker last Saturday

I have listened to Apogee Scintillas many times and can say they are quite good,
especially when driven by huge Krell amplifiers. They go slightly lower than Magneplanar
Tympani,s but have that one note bass that others have commented about.

Imaging is not very good and the over all balance is not as pleasing as my Tympani
bass and Martin Logan Summits, (no xover in the vital midrange), which effects
imaging and balance.

Low level detail is the main reason I like the Summits and when combining with
Tympani IV bass gives one a wonderful and spacious soundstage with awesome
midbass. Also the Tympani, Summit combo has a soundstage with huge depth that the Scintillas
lack.

As far as reproducing the 1812 Overture with conventional subwoofers is concerned,
(all) cone subwoofers ring and distort when trying to reproduce the cannons. Until
one hears the Magneplanar Tympani bass with a rotary subwoofer (transient energy
is enormous and response down to below 1 hz) one will never appreciate what this
awesome sub can do. From a distance the cannons reproduced by the rotary sub
sound very real (I was in Vietnam and have felt and heard mortars also from a distance)

This is the only subwoofer that will work properly with the Tympani IV bass, (coherence,
power, transients), with out effecting the wonderful mid bass. Taking the enormous
strain off the Tympanis (below 25 hz) and the power
amplifiers driving the Tympanis improves the mid bass as well.

As far as the highs are concerned, nothing can surpass or equal the Hill Plasma,
which my friend has added to his Apogee Scintillas and Stages. A real education
on what high frequency reproduction can sound like.
