except in the most ideal situations. Us audiophiles seem to forget even this most obvious of defects. Instead we focus on the limitations of the media in which we chose to implement this ill-defined standard as well as the equipment we chose to reproduce the contents of it. As if somehow better equipment or a storage media capable of higher capacity is going to unleash a world of hidden truths from within our stereo recordings. The fact that one might achieve an audible difference with higher resolution media or with more technically competent equipment hardly means anything when the format in which we've stored the music, ie. stereo, is so limited in the first place.
But alas this niche market has existed now for some 30 years or so and as long as we continue to support it someone will build stuff for us. Me I can't help but think this kind of stuff is not much more than spinning our wheels - what we need is a replacement for stereo that can guarantee accurate reproduction regardless of playback environment and in spite of the gear we've selected not because of it.
And just to clarify, I don't completely discount the importance of your comment in the big picture, however given the current state of home audio reproduction it is, IMHO, somewhat irrelevant.
