First of all, I'm not an objectivist.Second, your cherry juice analogy doesn't hold. Cables should not have a "sound" if they are "neutral". Preferences among different cables are fine - I have them myself. But which is neutral? What's the standard? Apparently, objectivists feel that 12 awg zipcord is the standard. I don't agree, but that is my belief, not necessarily a fact. Cherry kool-aid would also need a baseline - meaning that if there was a standard for how cherry kool-aid should taste, we'd be able to determine which variant most closely fits the baseline. There will always be people who like one over another, just as there as those who prefer audio products that don't measure well. Me, for example. I'm a tube guy also.
Third, I'm not defining what a properly designed cable is, I'm questioning the definition. If by "properly designed" we mean "neutral", my conundrum is that all audiophile cables can't be neutral and sound different. Neutral is neutral. If the baseline for proper design (neutrality) is zero, two cables that sound different from each other cannot both be at the zero baseline. One (or both) must be not totally neutral. Do you see what I mean? I can't always express myself properly over the 'net. But 2+2 = 4, not 3.956 or 4.013. So I guess what I'm saying is that NO cable is completely neutral; they all flail about on one side of neutrality or the other - which is why subjectivists use sonic preferences to determine what they buy.
So my bottom line question is since cables can sound different, what are the causes - and are they the results of improper design or proper but different designs? As I said, I'm not going to argue about whether cables can sound different. That question has already been answered to my satisfaction via my own experiences, sighted and blind.
