Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

You are WRONG!

You are completely wrong Kerr with this statement "The topic of whether different IC's and speaker wire can sound different should no longer be an issue - that train left the station years ago. The topic is, as Pat D has mentioned several times, is whether or not the differences are deviations from neutrality i.e is the cable "properly designed". This is just Objectivist BS at it's finest. Who are you, or who is Pat D that all other music lovers or audiophiles should accept or allow you or Pat D to define what a "properly designed" wire is?

The problem is Objectivists want to define something like Zip Cord (as you suggest) as "properly designed." Now anything that doesn't sound like this wire isn't "properly designed." So because the wire doesn't meet the Objectivists defintion of "properly designed" it is automatically eliminated.

I disagree with that assessment completely. MIT's wires are "properly designed." Alpha-Core's wires are "properly designed." Just because these wires are designed differently, that doesn't mean they are "improperly designed" as the Objectivists would want us to believe. But the Objectivists know that almost everyone will hear the difference between MIT's wire or Nordost's Valhalla. So in order to eliminate these differences the Objectivist insists they are "improperly designed" and THAT is why they sound different.

If it is assumed (as you say) by the objectivists that common zipcord is perfectly neutral and properly designed (it passes all information without audible coloration)I'd say the Objectivists that believe that should start by cleaning their ears. Zip Cord while not horribly offensive is at best only ok, sounding! In addition it is hardly "properly designed" unless you believe that wires that corrode horribly and turn green (as much of zip cord does)with time are "properly designed" wires!

I do agree that the differences in wires can range from very subtle to pronounced. I've never personally heard night and day differences, but I have heard quite pronounced differences. I can also agree that many wires DO indeed sound alike to me. But why shouldn't they sound alike?

After all many wires manufactuers are using the same wire, from the same manufactuer, the same dielectrics, the same ends etc, or just buying them from the same manufactuer like Belden for instance and then relabeling them? Who in their right mind would expect two of the exact same wires to sound differently when the ONLY difference is the name on the jacket? Yet that is what many Objectivists want to use as either proof that all wires sound alike or as their definition of a "properly designed" wire.

Like I said in my original post, that example is like having two different people use the same Cherry Kool-Aide and the same water and then after tasting it the Cherry Juice Objectivists starts exclaiming all Cherry Juice tastes the same or if it does taste different it not able to be detected.

Now to that comment a Cherry Juice Subjectivist claims, no that's not true Citrus-Lite Cherry Juice tastes completely different and better! So apon hearing this the Cherry Juice Objectivist looks at the Citrus-Lite Cherry Juice and notices the ingredients (like the ingredients that make different wires) are not exactly the same as those in Kool-Aide. Thus the Cherry Juice Objectivists claims this Citrus-Lite Cherry Juice is not "properly designed." and THAT is why it tastes different!

Well Kerr just like with MIT's and Alpha-Core's wires above, the Citrus-Lite Cherry Juice is not "improperly designed" it is only designed differently!

Like you I agree the person that finds the MIT cablebox wire to sound identical to, say, Nordost Valhalla should look at causes other than "it all sounds the same" to explain his lack of discernment. At the same time if they do hear a difference and that goes against their beliefs, I DO NOT accept that these wires are automatically "improperly designed" as the explinantion of the differences heard, either!

Objectivists need to open their minds or clean their ears at the very least. Then they WILL be able to hear the differences in wires that so many others hear so easily...
