You didn't mention how the Linux set up compared. In terms of transparency, detail and ambiance, nothing beats underclocked/undervolted Linux with MPD in my experience - Ubuntu Studio 9 in my case. Especially when you lose the X server.

I just got my Audio Advisor catalog today. Bryston just came out with a music server that simply uses an external USB drive for the music source - no CD drive at all. It's using Linux. I wonder if they did their own kernel tweaks.
