Re: RE Error Rates and Jitter

I don't question at all the relevance of jitter. I also don't claim that all CD transports sound alike or anything of that sort.

My main point was that jitter at the laser pickup of a transport doesn't really correlate to jitter at the DAC. Given that and if we can show error rates to be low enough that interpolation is not occuring (with any regularity), it is hard to come up with any reasonable explanation why any of the CD treatments would result in different output from the DAC.

To clarify this: [ If the transport mechanism & chipset are capable of delivering a reasonable error rate, the quality of the sound will depend almost completely on the clock & power supply. ]

Obviously there are other factors involved, but I firmly believe that the power supply quality at the DAC and the quality of the clock at the DAC are the key factors to the output of the DAC. (Given the chipset is not interpolating, and you are getting the same data.) I'm hard pressed to think of much more that affects the output of the DAC, other than radiated noise. And I certainly don't believe the CD treatments would effect that.

If we can show that the data coming to the DAC is the same, I think it would be difficult, at best, to prove or even come up with a reasonable hypothesis of how a CD treatment could influence any of the other factors involved in the DAC's output.

That is why -given no hard evidence (just subjective listening tests), and no good hypothesis- I question the validity of such tweaks.
