The fact is we were not there. We don't know how nuts he went, how loud it got and what he was playing.I would like to assume he is smart enough to realize when his amp is clipping however. Obviously 3's are bigger than 1's and make more demands but I have heard this amp drive 1's and not come close to clipping. That he went so loud and so hard that he blew ALL the fuses and never once beforehand had an inkling anything was wrong seems too much. He's not a first day audiophile.
As I said in another reply my friends classe once had some strange RFI or feedback problem that were apparently due to placement and cord arrangement. If this is an endemic problem to that model of amp and he had a similar problem I think it far more likely an unexpected RFI or feedback spike blew everything out rather than the amp is too sucky to drive the speakers. You admit you never owned it, I have heard one and lived with it a while even. The amp has it's pros and cons but it can drive low ohm loads. My god damned adcom 555 piece of shit never destroyed my 3's and I TRIED, believe me I tried. I am not buying the classe did it because it "stinks" so bad when it is far superior to the adcom.
I can't go for the fuse fantasy either. I am sure they all do not blow at the exact micro millisecond instant to one another, but I was reckless as a youth and blew LOTS of fuses and never once damaged the ribbon tweeters of my 3's. And I don't imagine they're making fuses any differently....
I do agree that the more power the better for maggies, regardless of their size, and there almost is no limit to how much good power they can (and will) take and use.
So I'll say it again, I told him to buy a Pass X250..... :^ )
It's all about the music...
