Re: Poor unlucky bastard

Both of them blew? Hmmmm.... That's a bit of a different kettle of fish.

Honestly, how loud were you cranking them, and was it a very dynamic piece? The more I've been thinking about this the more I recall my friend having a problem with his Classe when he first got it. It was just before he got maggies and he was using PSB speakers.

Now I do not exactly recall what happened as this was a few years ago but he was getting some kind of really hash white noise distorion at times and quite unexpectedly. Now it didn't hurt the PSB's but amplified thru maggies... It turned out that the amp was very critical about grounding or RFI or something and he had the cables twisted, rubbing or intertwined somehow that the amp would sometimes pick up and then magnify it like a feedback loop.

I recall it as at the time he made me come over as he was sure the amp was toast (like you are thinking) but I heard it for what it was and together we tore the rig apart and reconnected everything being very partial to cable and gear placement. I told him to stop being a slob and it turned out he never had the problem again.

I did not think of this at the time or even when you made this post but I do recall it now. If it is a peculiarity of that amp and not just one of them that may be what happened to you. I am sure you did not have the cabling mess he did but it might have been some casual touching that set it off. I recall as well that amp did not like sitting on the floor either.

Now it may not be this at all, my friends case may be a genuine one off event, but since I remembered it I felt it worth passing along. You might want to get a pair of cheapo monitors and see if you can duplicate the problem. If you find out what causes it you can avoid it. At least then if you decide to sell it you can warn the new owner and you won't feel bad like you're unloading a bomb on someone else.

I know it sucks but do you think I wanted to tear those crossover boxes apart 500 times either? :^ ) That's why it's called a hobby, we're always working at it ;^ )

It's all about the music...
