There are some variables here. I get the sense that on some hybrids, the redbook layer is slightly inferior to what it would be on an all-redbook disc. I've got some of both, same recordings. Channel classics sent me both redbooks and hybrids of the same thing. We were also comparing some current Alia Vox CD's and SACD's and a few others I've forgotten.

Another variable, of course is the player - and that was true here too. I listened to the SACD's on an Audience High Resolution modded Sony NV999, the redbook cd's mainly on an Audio Note front end. For the record, the redbooks sounded better on even a Dac 1.1x Signature II I had here at the time (in addition to my reference Dac 4.1 Balanded) than the SACD's sounded on the Audience/Sony. The AN dac retails for $2200 (transport was another $3500 or so, the earlier CD2), the Audience/Sony for $5200. The redbook sounded a bit better than SACD on the Audience/Sony too, though not as much better as it did on the AN rig.
