Speculation

71.232.93.134

Is it possible that SACD makes listeners more aware of sound and consequently, a little less attentive to the music? I have been trying to put a finger on what the SACD/CD thing is ever since I did a comparison here a year or so ago, using SACD's and CD's (not hybrids) of some Channel Classics discs. The SACD was sonically more interesting but the CD was more musically involving. My son-in-law, who loves music but doesn't pay much attention to the World of Audio, had the same reaction. He was initially quite taken by the SACD - "I can hear what it's doing, the space/ambience thing is neat." Then, when we switched to the CD (same recording), he noticed that it was the performance he was taken by. Ultimately he (and I) found the SACD's sound distracting. Neato but distracting.
