Similar feelings here, as well. I decided to upgrade my digital source a little while ago.Of the 3 "local" (within 200 miles) hi-fi dealers I found for a handful of CDP's I was interested in, I found (Rant, on):
Full MSRP, no haggling, from every shop. Man, that's a GREAT deal.
NO return policy other than a 15 day "option to trade up" at one shop. Right, I'm pinching pennies as a grad student to drop a grand on this CDP, now you're gonna suggest that in order to get the performance I might want, I need to spend ANOTHER $1400?
One dealer found it necessary to inform me that my CD's weren't "reference material". When I asked him to pick one of his fav CD's to let me listen to, I got 28 minutes of Sade, Love Deluxe. Err, ummm, no... please, no. Seriously, stop.
One dealer had a 30 day return period, minus a 25% "restocking" fee... twenty-five percent???
NO in-home auditions from ANY of them. Even WITH a deposit. No Mr. Dealer, I'm not going to spill beer on your demo gear, and I'm not going to steal it either. I promise...
Way to build MY confidence in spending money at YOUR pissant little shops. Sorry, guys, I'm headed straight to A'gon!
