I have had a different experience. The vast majority of dealers I have known have been friendly, helpful, accommodating, and supportive after the sale.Stopping in at the local dealer has been fun for me to see what is new. There has been little or no pressure to buy. Advice on alternatives is forthcoming and often does not reflect a desire to sell the most expensive item in the store.
Most of the dealers I have know, have allowed me to take home equipment overnight, and sometimes several days for audition.
I have never paid full price, and did not have to do more than ask if a discount was possible. At the same time, I did not try and negotiate a price lower than their first offer (which is often 10-25% off).
The dealers I enjoy most also discuss music, and will often volunteer to play a new CD or two and recommend others.
I realize the market is changing and dealers are having a tough time. It depends upon what you want, lowest price or the ability to audition gear locally and receive personal service.
I for one will pay a little more to have options.
