I think a small MLTL coax might be just the ticket for you! Radian has a new 10 inch coax that looks really good. It's the Model 5210-- all new.
A MLTL can be designed around this driver and that way you can still have space to spare inside your room. It doesn't need to be very large at all. If you can talk him into it, Greg Monforte (Hi-Eff forum) might help with the math. Build it out of 1 inch or better Marine Plywood, and don't use ANY kind of internal bracing-- you're after clean sound, not the sound of collisions with braces. The rest can be worked out. Maybe you have someone local who can help with this MLTL.
It's the way to go! Point source, but two drivers. It's the answer.
