Hi
In terms of transformer phase shift - you get phase shift when the response rolls off. A full range SET transformer will therefore shift phase at the extremes -ie bass and treble. Phase will not shift where the response is flat.
By optimising each transformer for the range it is good at, you can avoid this. Transformers are like horns in that they are optimal when not attempting to carry 10 octaves!
For example, a typical full range transformer will be -1dB or worse at 20kHz. But a transformer optimised for the tweeters will be smaller and the rolloff can be pushed out towards 100kHz or higher. As a result, it will be near enough flat in the treble range, hence no phase shift.
The other thing is that with smaller transformers, you can use nicer core materials, such as 80% nickel - which sound *glorious*. And you may then even then be able to afford silver wiring...
Hope this helps!
