It might be worth having a conversation with Craig Uthus about the filament voltage in his 2A3. I think it's DC. I also think this amp will play 45s.
But 110dB speakers pose as many problems to DHT amps as solutions, as you already mentioned. You probably don't need more than 96-98dB sensitive speakers, and then you could think about 2-ways. However, none of the really good ones are cheap. Look at the Devore Orangutans, the Vaughn loudspeakers (which play well with wavelength amps), and the AN-Es of course. I've also looked at the Pi speaker Four-Pi, a kit with a 15" mid-bass driver and a compression (waveguide) tweeter.
I forget to mention the Wavelength 45 amps as a possibility, but again pretty pricey, esp if you get the silver Magnequest OPTs (if they are still being made).
