Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

FYI That's not a trumpet.

Armstrong played a cornet, which is pitched the same but has a different sound---somewhat kazoo-like now that you mention it. Armstrong switched to trumpet in the late 20's, at least by 1930. I initially found the Hot Five recordings unlistenable, I thought because the music was so 'primitive'. I have since learned better. Or maybe because of the sound, which I now find very direct compared to modern recordings, though I certainly hear its limitations, and can understand how some might not be able to tolerate it. At least I can listen around it, because I could't be without 'Struttin' With Some Barbeque'. Happy listening!
