Yes - Rachmaninoff playing his own concertos - indispensable, despite the ancient sound quality. But even so, they're not the first performances of these works I would reach for.
Regarding overload distortion, I agree with you, even though I initially missed it on some of the tracks of the Stokowski "Rhapsody" Living Stereo SACD and you took me to task about about it some years ago. ;-) There are other Living Stereo CD's/SACD's with overload distortion too - even the fabled Reiner Scheherzade has touches of it every now and then.
I agree that some of those Phase 4 recordings are just the worst, and yet. . . I still can't bear to let those Stokowski Phase-4's go!
