I will say that when I'm at home I tend to gravitate to what shows off my sound system the best, but I only tend to listen to "historic" recordings on my sound system (as opposed to car and iPod). Good recordings sound good on any system, but poor ones sound a lot better when played back on a quality system. Like everyone else, I have preconceived notions about how mono recordings sound, but when I actually play them, I'm always pleasantly surprised.
I'm always fond of saying that a great performance will transcend any sonic limitations.
Exactly, a great performance will pull you in and as you've said elsewhere, your brain fills in the holes.
