Hi John - actually, I was not referring to the critical listening musicians must do at all. Like you, I am speaking of listening purely for pleasure. In fact, if we are speaking of critical listening, then the audio quality would become more important.
Chris brings up an interesting point about recordings made today - I myself have argued that today's digital recordings are not much like real performances anymore, and not just because of the edits, but because of the process of digital recording and processing itself. I was not even thinking of digital recording, frankly - almost all of my listening for pleasure is analog, I would say at least 90%.
Every musician I know listens through bad recording quality to the performance, though of course it is more enjoyable if the recording quality is good. When the two go together, it is sublime. An example in the opera world would be the famous Bernstein recording of Carmen with Marilyn Horne - both sonics and performance are incredible. In fact, Chris, I almost cannot believe that your comments about 78's, etc. are serious! And there are some very good quality recordings of Maria Callas, for instance - I just the other day listened to a recording of Bellini's Norma with her and Christa Ludwig and Franco Corelli. I hasten to add that Callas is not a personal favorite, my point is that there are quite a few well made recordings of her - there certainly aren't any analog recordings of the current singers!
