I agree that Rachmaninoff playing Rachmaninoff is not my go to for these pieces.
I'll concede that I don't have too many pre-stereo and especially pre-mono "go to recordings," but that's due in part to the fact that so few have been released on CD, and thus, I don't have many. And a lot of musicians lived long enough lives that they were able to do stereo remakes of earlier mono recordings where their interpretations either didn't change or actually improved.
I have all the Stokowski Phase 4, but one really objectionable one that comes to mind is the "Firebird" Suite. The climaxes of the "Infernal dance" and "Finale" are completely unlistenable -- I'll take 1930s mono over them any day.
