Agree re the violins and that is why I avoided digital like the plague in the early days. Thankfully better DAC has generally overcome that so now I prefer digital over analog - the snap crackle and pop of vinyl along with the cleaning & geometry hassles make it unacceptable to me now.
But quite a few older recordings, some into the stereo era, do not have enough clarity for me. Yes, there are exceptions and the Richter piano recordings are an excellent example, but even then it can be challenging. His playing of "Pictures at an Exhibition" is marred by tape wow which jolts one back to reality.
Bottom line for me is to generally (with few exceptions) prefer to listen to a good/great modern recording in preference to an older one, no matter how great the artistry.
For those advocating artistic brilliance in older recordings over more recent efforts - a list?
OK Richter qualifies but who else?
