Thanks Peter for speaking up. In the last week, I have tried various levels and settings on the 1700B, in order to see if I can find something wrong with the test equipment. So far, I can't find anything out of line. Of course, you are correct about the JPS cable, but at the moment, I have a tiny amount of 7th harmonic present that I think at about .00015% that seems to come from inside the front end of the 1700B, probably from the 2'nd stage differencing IC in the instrumentation front end. I have tried different IC's, in the past, but most were worse than the original Harris device designed in the machine, in this case.
Comparing it to an Apex audio cable, I get a rise in distortion at 3rd, 5th, 7th, 8th, and 9th harmonics of about 10db, except for third which was at -110dB (.0003%) initially, and with the Apex, rose to about .0005%. Reverting back to the JPS cable, puts everything back to almost the equipment residual above 5th harmonic. These measurements were made as I type this input.
For the record, the residual noise spec over 80KHz (my working range) on the 1700B is now -115dBV, which is better than the spec for the AP cascade system, which is 112dB.
I hope to learn more about the design of the AP system in the near future.
