The Leventhal AES article on this is a must-read

In the AES Journal, there is an article by Les Leventhal called "Type 1 and Type 2 Errors in the Statistical Analysis of Listening Tests" that is from my POV a must-read on the subject. His education is a Ph.D in experimental psychology, so he's not an engineering type. The treatment is very even-handed, and reading between the lines, he seems a bit on the subjectivist side if anything. There was a discussion about this in some Stereophile letters to the editor here where Leventhal chimed in. The first time I tried to read his AES article, I was somewhat baffled by it. Then later I found Leventhal's letters in Stereophile linked above. After reading them, I went back and re-read his AES paper and it made a lot more sense. Anybody who would like to read this paper is welcome to email me and I'll send it to you.

The info in that paper is probably old hat to Tony (being a math major), but for others including engineers it's not likely to be.
