Memories (sniff)

Back in '75 or so (when I lusted for a JC-2), I bought a PAT-5 preamp which used a pair of LM-301s. It wasn't long after that Frank Van Alstine came up with a circuit mod that, among other things, replaced the lowly 301s with LF356s if memory serves. What a difference!

As for current dumpers, the Stasis family of Threshold amps designed by Nelson Pass in the late 70s were really refined versions of Peter Walker's basic concept. I still have an '81 Stasis 3 that I use in my vintage system. Using gaggles of matched, high speed outputs, he combined a cascode Class A front end with a current mirror, both of which were directly connected to the load. No overall feedback was employed between the separate stages. It is still a very sweet sounding amplifier today.

Funny how the concept of amplifier audibility hasn't changed much in 25 years!
