I observe the same effects, but ...

I am not sure an actual ground connection is required for a closed metal enclosure to keep RFI in, (or out!)

It is far to long since I studied this, but such an enclosure, originally called a Faraday cage simply needs to be a fully enclosed conductive "wrapper".

In cold-war days it was beleived that keeping your emergency transistor radio in a biscuit-tin would make it immune to EMP from a an atomic bomb. I never did this experiment.
