Re: I didn't know I had a ghostwriter!

"I'm not a trained listener"

You don't consider hours of listening per day "training"?? If you are a careful listener and realize what aspects of live sound are missing from reproduction then you are trained. Training entails going to live, unamplified concerts frequently as well to know what correct should sound like.

Sorry, I have heard the mess some "tonmeisters" make with some classical recordings (DGG for example has some good recordings but many are not good at all). Training is no substitute for talent. If you have no talent for hearing what is correct then rather then buying from specs, which tell you very little, then I would suggest finding someone who really hears well to help you.

"That's where specs and measurements come into play: they won't tell you how a component sounds (although I know some people to whom they will) but they will tell you if that component is accurate (or not). "

This is a fallacy that you operate under. Accuracy to an oscilloscope is not the same as accuracy to a human listener. Sorry its so but it is. What the specs tell you is that the gear was designed to a certain number of criteria that the designer considers important. Whether or not that designer has a clue about what sound should come out can only be told by listening.

Powered speakers are at the mercy of the amps the designer has decided to use. If they are not exceptional quality the whole design can suffer.

I can see you have a very mechanical approach to the whole thing that doesn't lend any credit to your actually sense of hearing. It is all an intellectual exercise to you and this is where I think you make a mistake. Dig deeper and see the reasons why specs are made the way they are. Realize they have a poor correlation overall with perceived sound quality. This has been known for a long time and only the most stubborn refuse to admit it.

"there is no solid and objective evidence which shows that components sound different"

Is your thinking really so closed and concrete?? There have been blind tests that show there are audible differences. Also, long term listening allows time to overcome bias and it is here that differences are readily audible.

You live in Germany, right? Where approximately? I live in Zürich. Perhaps we could meet if you are willing.
