Actually, without going into all the details, to change the Musician so that it could accept directly PCM digital streams would have required a totally new amp design basically. The Musician is based on an analog class d design with analog feedback taken from after the output filter. A delta-sigma type power dac architecture in open loop (a la tact and panasonic-same chip set basically) can take direct PCM, which it converts to PWM. It has no analog feedback-it is open loop. It is a completely different design. Now, without creating too big a stir, let me say that there are many class d designers who feel that the analog class d approach is better from many standpoints than the power dac approach, even with direct digital input. Many people think that "less is more", and that a direct digital input is superior to using a DAC. The fact is, direct digital input still requires a conversion from PCM to PWM. This is a source of difficulty. Because of the nature of an analog signal, error correction and feedback is better implemented in analog class d designs, and when done correctly, they spec out much better. Not saying that they will sound better, but it is a cleaner approach. Also, the open loop approach as used by Tact requires much more attention to the power supply, which adds complication and expense. Bottom line, counterintuitive as it may be, analog class d may be a better choice in most applications.
