Tom -
A few thoughts came to mind as I read some of the related posts:
* Since you already own your system, try some of the free / low cost things before replacing a component. Speaker placement is free, and an underutilized means of system tweaking. While expensive for fuses, the Hi-Fi Tuning fuses will run you about $180 (if you want to replace all fuses). Someone mentioned trying Anti-cable - about $80-100 and returnable if you don't like.
* Before using a tube pre-amp, you may want to ask Charles Hanson of Ayre (posts here often) if he thinks there would be any compatibility issues due to impedence differences.
* Someone (Abe maybe) made a good point about 'soft' sounding tue equipment - for me, not a good thing. YMMV. Heck, we all own recordings that have poor production values, which makes the 'soft' sound a seemingly convenient option. Never worked well for me, but again, YMMV.
Good luck with 'the hunt' : )
