And you have to define enough bass especially if a speaker is reasonably flat say to around 40 Hz. That should be enough especially since there will be room lift. I wonder if reflex bass isn't preferred because it has a little extra bass and it lasts a little longer due to extra overhang. My own preference is for maximum bass detail which is partly due to minimum overhang(and the bass harmonics).I always worry, as per Percey Wilson's Zanzibar fallacy, that an audiophile's reference is his own system that he's so familiar with. And I do include myself there.
Another thought that's pro for ported designs. We listen at levels where our ear bass response rolls off(Fletcher/Munson). Perhaps reflex bass compensates for this.
