...is that you've been listening to rock and pop, which are modern idioms that derive heavily from various traditional ones. If you have an itch, I'd suggest you try listening to masterpieces/masterworks from the more traditional and established genres.There is a wealth of stuff not only from the US (jazz, blues, country, gospel, bluegrass,zydeco); but more so from aroung the world (western classical, indian, flamenco, arabic, persian, reggae, juju, afro-brazil, etc).
These genres tend to attract very serious and talented musicians. Try borrowing CD's from your local library to dicover these genres, and you may find something you never knew existed.
