Try David Benoit or The Rippingtons

often associated with smooth (or snooze) jazz, I submit that these two are far from it. Both hit their stride in the early 90s and continue today. David Benoit has mellowed (just a bit) in the 21st century but still maintains his unique cutting edge sound. The Rippingtons since around 2000 started moving toward a more latin sound but their stuff from the 90s is simply awesome. I'd suggest for David Benoit you give a listen to "The Best of David Benoit 1987-1995". It has a nice cross section of his best stuff. For the Rippingtons the obvious suggestion would be "Live In L.A.". One of the best live performances you'll ever hear (or if you're lucky and can find the vhs tape of the concert on eBay, see). As far as their studio stuff the debate rages on. It's a 50 - 50 toss-up between "Curves Ahead" or "Weekend In Monaco". If you want something a little more mellow by them then try "Black Diamond" or "Topaz".
