try the Pablo series with Joe Pass, Oscar Peterson, Bill (Count) Basie small group or with Oscar, Montreux 77 and Milt Jackson's stuff. Although they're recordings of older artists, I enjoy these a lot, instead of the jazz you describe as stuff you don't want. I agree with trying Time Out by Brubeck. Classic album. And try some Ella Fitzgerald, like the infamous Ella in Berlin.Classical, agree with morricab, you need some.
Added suggestions using his rec's:
Beethoven's 3rd Symphony "Eroica" (Klemperer/New Philharmonia or Szell/Cleveland or Schmidt Isserstedt/VPO are good)--Get the 5th (Szell/Amsterdam or Kleiber, Carlos/Vienna), 6th (Walter/Columbia Odyssey or older 2 or 6 eye Columbia or Masur/Leipzig) and 9th Symphony (Szell/Cleveland, Solti/Chicago, Reiner/Chicago and Klemperer/New Philharmonia or Walter/NYPO older if you find it)
Schubert's "Great" symphony--Szell/Cleveland or Bohm/Berlin are good
Schubert "Trout" Quintet (R. Serkin/Marlboro Columbia or Clifford Curzon/Vienna)
Beethoven "Kreutzer" Sonata or many other chamber pieces
Mozart "Jupiter" (41st) Symphony (Karajan/Vienna on RCA, Szell/Cleveland), often mated with 40th which is arguably his greatest.
Mozart Violin Concertos number 3 and 5 (just acquired Menuhin/Bath Festival orchestra, some like Schnederhan on DGG with Berlin or Stern and Cleveland/Szell)
Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto number 1 (classic is Van Cliburn/pickup orchestra with Kondrashin on RCA shaded dog; another is S. Richter/Vienna Symphony/Karajan on DGG)
Just about any Mozart quartet
Schubert "Death and the Maiden" quartet (one of my favorite)
Tchaikovsky 4th symphony or 5th and 6th also.
