More Jazz Suggestions (and some pop too)

Joyous, I see we share similar tastes in pop music. In the last couple of years, I've been exploring jazz more and more. Here are some things you might like (and the idea of borrowing first from a library before you begin hunting down the vinyl is an excellent one):
In addition to Kind of Blue and Someday My Prince Will Come, early Miles Davis from the 50's might float your boat--Smokin', Workin', Relaxin', and Cookin' are all great. A mixture of ballads and uptempo material but all feature a strong sense of rhythm and melody (the antithesis of the "noodley" jazz you're avoiding). Originals are pricey, but Fantasy (I think) reissued these classics in two set of double albums--these are easier to find and affordable.
Coltrance has a number of really nice ballad albums. Coltrane Play for Lover and Coltrane Plays Ballads. Beautiful music.
I see that you like Lou Rawls. Check out the duets between Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Great singing and interplay between the two and fine musical perfomances.

Re pop: Check out Yo La Tengo, especially I Can Hear the Hear Beating as One and Summer Sun.

Have fun on your journey.
