I'd be concerned that the unit is stolen with serial numbers scrubbed like that. You may want to contact the NYPD (or wherever you think is appropriate based on MSS' location) to see if anyone reported the item stolen. Maybe MSS is a fence?? I don't know but calling the police is a pretty easy way to find out.

Also, Paypal has some (tedious) remedies for this tyope of fraud even with bank payments. I would do whatever you can to stop payment and report the fraud. Contact your bank if paypal won't play ball.
