RE: "scientifically/technically literate"

> Does this not lead to the question of who are peers?

Not when it is a judgement call.

> I think this is not a constructive response.

It is pointing out that this statement is incorrect: "Also if people hear differences one can offer two explanations". There are many possible hypotheses including the long tested and accepted scientific ones. For the rational, there is not much point making up new ones without something being wrong with the long accepted (by the technically literate) old ones. An exception might be if one is trying to market audiophile hardware.

> Fundamentally, this is not true.

Well you will no doubt become very famous when you let the world know why since it is currently taught to pretty much every child in the world. It is called the scientific method if you wish to look it up. And if you read what I posted or other explanations about the scientific method they will not state you can prove a scientific hypothesis. However, you can prove a mathematical hypothesis and so your statement "Since we can never prove a hypothesis" is not correct. Prove depends on the accepted basis for true and false.

> Who should say they should not act this way?

Who is stating that they should not? Examples would be appreciated.

I suspect it will be pretty difficult for you to find people stating audiophiles should be prevented from purchasing whatever audiophile hardware is on the market. You may believe that all those anti-audiophiles must think this but projecting your beliefs is not the same as your beliefs being true in an objective sense.

What you will find is some people objecting to some of the marketing of audiophile hardware because it disagrees with what the mainstream considers to be true. Personally I think the line is currently drawn in about the right place but others may want to shift it further towards what is considered true by the mainstream.

In general, non-audiophiles find the beliefs of audiophiles to be silly or foolish but not objectionable. It is difficult to object to harmless luxury goods except possibly on financial grounds if this stretches beyond prudent for a hobby.
