RE: Distortion...

I almost did specifically include amplitude as a distortion component. It's neat that you noticed it's absence. As you say it's usually easy to correct in audio systems. I'd like to add a qualifier to that "as long as there is sufficient S/N".

I think you are positing a list of distortions sorted by increasing badness.

1. Amplitude. No problem correcting given enough S/N.
2. Other LTI distortions. Possible, but harder to correct. Need access to the system transfer function.
3. Non-linear distortions. Only approximate correction possible.

Please correct the list, but that's how I interpret what you wrote.

I'm certainly "gaining useful experience and perspective" by messing with and experiencing the part of the system under my control: playback. You are all too right that the whole chain is important. But most of us have only the coarsest control over the recording and delivery part of the process: we can choose what we buy. And that's next door to no control at all... So, I think we should be admired for trying to make the best of it and not derided for buying "audiophile records"!

Additionally, I think if you scratch the surface that you'll find much more appreciation of and experience with live performance, sound reinforcement and the recording process among audiophiles than you seem to think. Even if our results were dismal, they do as you say "add appreciation".

I like your distortion priorities and hope I understood them correctly. Could we extend it one more notch and introduce capital punishment for anyone deliberately using a compressor on music?

Regards, Rick
