RE: Don't scientists test hypotheses?

"Shouldn't blind tests be used to examine a specific hearing claim (hypothesis) rather than an open-ended test "to see if anyone notices anything?""

Yes in general but one should never overlook observations made about anamolies. Often the most interesting bits in science are not the expected results but the new and unexpected results, which then warrant a further controlled study.

The fact that someone observed something that was missed by others is interesting. The question as to WHY he noticed it and no one else did is even more interesting. Is it because his hearing ear/brain is better at noticing small anamolies? Is it because the effect was noticed but quite small and no one thought to report it? Clearly not all 60 listeners were bad (unless they recruited only deaf people) and statistically a couple should be able to hear as well as Locanthi (or not). Was the sound inaudible under the test conditions? If so why? What is the masking effect. Was the system used for testing inadequate to show up the problem? Was it stress from the listeners? What?

"If something is subtle then four people chosen at random may not hear it.
The fifth person tested the next day might hear it.
"

They had 60 listeners and lots and lots of tests...there was plenty of opportunity to hear it.

"Why would anyone be surprised about that result?
(so unlike most sighted comparisons
where ALMOST EVERYONE thinks he hears an A-B
difference almost all the time!)

I've been trying to make that point since 1996.
"

Not sure what you mean here.
