"...could tell you what brand of Scotch he was drinking sight unseen...I cannot do this either, can you?"

Yes, as a matter of fact, I can. A friend of mine once tested me - she chose four scotches from my collection, and I identified all four correctly, blind. It wasn't double blind, but she actually tried to fool me ("are you SURE??") so I count it :-). She also didn't tell me which four she was picking, so I was choosing each out of about 15 possibilities (the size of my single malt collection at the time). Odds of success by guess are around 1/30000.

"I believe it's very unprofessional and insulting for JREF to imply those audiophiles/music lovers who have taken the time to develop & hone their listening skills --just like people develop & hone many other skills-- to above average capabilities as being practicers of the paranormal."

It's extremely insulting, which is one reason I posted it here. I think audiophiles should take up this challenge and prove him wrong.

Also I fully agree with you that training helps, and I don't doubt at all that people can develop their hearing and become better at these tests. There are limits, however - our ears are only so good, and anything beyond that limit can be termed paranormal. It just comes down to what you think the limit is.
