Re: Yes Steve I Wish You Would

"but the truth is the article explains quite clearly that when a given condition were true, then you would end up with the result I described, i.e and SET amp that actually is cleaner than a solid state amp."

I read the article and, sorry, saw nothing to justify that statement. The article said that under certain conditions, SECOND harmonic could conceivably be completely cancelled. But what about 3rd and 5th harmonic (and higher)? SETs do produce those as well, and at much, much, higher levels than typical high feedback solid state amps do. Third harmonic level, though lower than second, is still quite high from an SET. And those harmonics that don't cancel, they go forth and multiply. And are also often reputed to sound more objectionable than 2nd harmonic.

I can't buy the argument that SETs are preferred by some because of lower distortion when combined with a speaker. Must be something else. My favorite theory is that maybe 2nd harmonic simulates what ears make at higher levels (hearing generates distortion, too) and people generally consider something that is louder to sound better, as long as it doesn't hurt... not an original idea, and not likely to be testable, but makes sense to me.
