The only significant changes have been more power at lower prices for solid state equipment.Although solid state amps are usually 100 wpc or higher, many small speakers are much less efficient then the big speakers in the old days, so intermittent clipping is common.
While clipping distortion is usually not very loud, and only lasts a small fraction of a second, at high volumes it can add audible odd-order harmonics at dynamic range peaks ... just when the small speakers already had too much harmonic and intermodulation distortion.
As all musicians know, tube amps can be driven into clipping but the resulting intermittent distortion is much easier on the ears. Many rock musicians consider it part of their music.
With high efficiency speakers the amplifier used makes little difference, IMHO. The best home theater I have ever heard, using owner-designed expensive high-efficiency speakers, was driven by a $150 Pioneer receiver purchased at Cosco.
